YATRA

Sanskriti Yatra is an endeavour to sensitise tender minds and bring about an awareness and understanding of our cultural and natural heritage. Yatra means journey, and this journey offered at the Sanskriti Kendra enables children to express creatively and explore the world at their own pace. Amidst the peaceful and safe environs the resources available at the Sanskriti Kendra can be channelised to create interesting programmes for children. To enumerate a few resources:

The Nature Trail
A dry empty stretch of land in 1979, the Kendra now blooms with over 1000 trees and shrubs, Ashoka, Amaltas, Arjun, to name but a few. The stillness of the erstwhile barren silence is now textured with a wide variety of birdcalls. Birds like Blue Throat, Oriental Magpie, Robin, and Coppersmith Barbett now visit and inhabit the rich foliage. A Nature Trail has been developed, where information on various trees, shrubs and birds is shared.

Three unique Museums

The three Museums of Everyday Art, Indian terracotta and Indian textiles give children the opportunity to witness the creative genius of India, its many cultures and communities. The Everyday Art Museum contains over 2000 objects of daily use, be it toys, writing implements, kitchen utensils, things for women’s beauty culture. They all combine functionality with exceptional beauty.

The Terracotta museum has a collection of over 1500 objects from various regions of India. Many of these objects were created on site by artisans from across the country. The Textiles museum showcases some fine examples of Indian textiles in patola, bandhini, kalamkari, appliqué work, brocade and intricate embroideries. The people of ancient India expressed their philosophical ideas, summarized their worldview figuratively in terms of weaving and created rich and glorious traditions of textiles.

The magnificent clay pots of the terracotta museum, the textile samples from several states of India, the myriad forms displayed in the Everyday arts museum reveal to the children that in India since time immemorial, form and function have always been accompanied by a strong sense of aesthetics.
The museums help in inculcating respect for the generations gone by. We need to acknowledge with humility that we are not the first inventors or the best. There are many who came before us and there are many ways of achieving the same purpose that ours is but one way.

Interaction with creative people

Interactive activities at the Kendra with resident artists from the world over, exposes the children to diverse cultures and thought processes. It is an opportunity to bring their inner world out into the open and thus experience the joy of sharing.

Workshops are specially designed under:

A-Day-at-Sanskriti is a single day visit to the Kendra, with workshops designed to interact with the cultural resources. This can be done along with workshops on painting, toy making, jewellery making, papier-mache, calligraphy, story telling and creative writing.

Overnight Workshops
During these, the children learn about Delhi's night sky, participate in a weekend theatre, dance or music workshops, or have a discussion about culture and interact with traditional craftsmen. Under this module children from outside Delhi too can be included in the programme.

Core Programme
Under this module are identified a group of children who participate in a set of five modules over the academic year, designed specially by educationalists and resource persons. The modules are intended to complement the school curriculum, create a better understanding of nature, culture and art, and enhance the personal, artistic and creative development of children.

We at Sanskriti would like children from all backgrounds and communities as well as those with special needs to partake of these resources. Our gift to children is to enable them to enjoy learning, to discover their talents, and to explore all realms of creative possibilities.
